Description: Farnesol (FOH) and geranylgeraniol (GGOH) are produced by dephosphorylation of farnesyl pyrophosphate and geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate, respectively, although they are in turn phosphorylated to their pyrophosphates. The two isoprenoids are increasingly known to display multiple functions. GGOH was shown to be a ligand for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors α and γ and a negative regulator of liver X receptor α, and its constant synthesis in mouse brain was suggested to be essential for learning. Geranylgeraniol has antibacterial activity against S. aureus FDA209P and that its mode of action involves damage to cell membranes, being similar to that of farnesol. Thermal stability improvement was achieved by OSA modification.
