Description: Genistein (4′, 5, 7-trihydroxyisoflavone), one of the major soy isoflavones, has attracted major interests in the last few decades since several epidemiological studies indicated that intake of soy rich diet may be one of the important factors contributing to the lower incidence of breast and prostate cancer in Asian countries. Among many isoflavones, genistein is the most studied and has demonstrated a wide variety of biological activities that make it a good candidate as a chemopreventive agent. Genistein possesses a structure similar to estrogen and can both mimic and antagonize estrogen effects although at high concentrations it inhibits breast cancer cell proliferation. Polyamines, including putrescine, spermidine, and spermine (SPM), are polycations with anti-oxidative, anti-aging, and cell autophagy induction properties. The biologically active amines, spermine(SPM), and agmatine, have specific functions on mitochondria which distinguish them from other amines. SPM increases autophagy by directly binding to p53 and p21 promoters. Furthermore, SPM ameliorates ischemia/reperfusion injury in cardiomyocytes via regulation of autophagy. Polyamines also function as anti-inflammatory factors through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokine synthesis.
