Description: The doping material utilized was 12-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA) , which can be produced by hydrogenation of the double bond of castor oil and is an organic gelator with a low molecular weight. Aqueous solutions of the ethanolamine salt of 12-hydroxystearic acid are known to form tubes of several tens of micrometers in length with a temperature-tunable diameter. Various LC alignments (planar, hybrid, multistable hybrid, and vertical alignments) were achieved by modulating the doped gelator concentrations. The multistable characteristic of LCs doped with the gelator is also presented. The alignment by doping with a gelator reduces the manufacturing costs and provides a means of fabricating fast-responding, flexible LC displays using a low-temperature process.
